James spent his career in the investment management industry specialising in listed investment companies and was Director and Head of Investment Trusts at Janus Henderson until his retirement in 2022. As a director of Janus Henderson, he also sat on the board of the firm’s principal regulated operating subsidiary. His expertise in governance was therefore applied not only to assist the boards of his client companies but also the wider Janus Henderson Group. From 2015-22 James was a Common Councillor of the City of London Corporation sitting on both the Planning and Transportation Committee and the Finance Committee, where he chaired its Corporate Asset Sub-Committee. He has a very active pro-bono portfolio and is Chair of Governors of a girls’ independent secondary school and on the Trustee boards of two charities. He is a former member of the Council of St Paul’s Cathedral, where he is still an independent member of both their Finance Committee and their Investment Committee and is a member of the Non-Property Investment Guidance Group of the London Diocese. He is a Past Master of two City of London Livery Companies; the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and the Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers.
